HSC Business Studies | Free Study Notes

A Case Study Bank helps you prepare strong examples for HSC Business Studies exam questions. Case studies are useful because they let you apply syllabus knowledge to real Australian and global businesses, especially in business reports and extended responses.

In this lesson

  • how to build a case study bank

  • how to choose Australian and global business examples

  • how to prepare examples for operations, marketing, finance and human resources

  • how to apply case studies in exam answers

  • how to avoid vague or unsupported examples

Core notes

What is a case study bank?

A case study bank is a collection of business examples that you can use in exam responses.

It should include:

  • business names

  • key strategies used by each business

  • examples linked to syllabus topics

  • possible outcomes or impacts

  • short notes you can remember under exam pressure

The aim is not to memorise huge amounts of information. The aim is to have flexible examples that can be adapted to different questions.

For example, one business might be useful for marketing, operations and human resources, depending on how you use the evidence.

Why case studies matter in HSC Business Studies

Case studies help show that you can apply business theory to real situations.

They are especially useful in:

  • business reports

  • extended responses

  • higher-mark short answer questions

  • questions asking you to analyse, discuss, evaluate or recommend

A strong case study does not just name a business. It explains what the business did and how this affected performance.

Weak example:

“Woolworths uses marketing.”

Stronger example:

“Woolworths uses loyalty programs and customer data to target promotions more effectively. This can increase repeat purchases and strengthen customer loyalty.”

For help using examples in longer answers, revise extended responses [Writing Extended Responses].

Australian businesses

Why use Australian business examples?

Australian businesses are useful because HSC Business Studies often focuses on businesses operating in Australia. They can help you show understanding of local markets, consumers, legal influences and economic conditions.

Australian examples may include:

  • Woolworths

  • Coles

  • Qantas

  • Canva

  • Atlassian

  • BHP

  • Commonwealth Bank

  • Afterpay

  • Telstra

  • JB Hi-Fi

You do not need to know every detail about these businesses. You need clear, accurate examples that link to syllabus content.

How to prepare Australian examples

For each Australian business, write short notes under headings such as:

  • business function

  • strategy

  • evidence

  • outcome

  • possible exam use

Example:

Business: QantasFunction: Human resourcesStrategy: Training, employee relations and workplace negotiationsOutcome: Can be linked to productivity, service quality, staff morale and workplace disputesPossible exam use: HR strategies, workplace disputes, managing change

This is much easier to revise than a long paragraph.

Global businesses

Why use global business examples?

Global businesses are useful for questions about globalisation, global marketing, global operations, global financial management and human resource strategies across countries.

Examples may include:

  • Apple

  • McDonald’s

  • Nike

  • Toyota

  • Samsung

  • Amazon

  • Tesla

  • Coca-Cola

  • Unilever

  • Netflix

Global businesses can help you discuss economies of scale, global sourcing, standardisation, customisation, global branding and supply chain management.

How to use global examples carefully

Make sure the example links directly to the question.

For example, McDonald’s can be used for:

  • global branding

  • customisation in different countries

  • standardised operations processes

  • training systems

  • supply chain management

A strong answer explains which strategy is being used and why it matters.

Example:

“McDonald’s uses global branding through its recognisable logo, store design and core menu items. However, it also customises some products to suit local markets. This helps the business maintain a consistent global identity while responding to customer preferences in different countries.”

For more support with global marketing examples, revise global marketing [Global Marketing].

How to build your own case study bank

Step 1: Choose a small number of flexible businesses

You do not need twenty detailed case studies. It is better to know a smaller number well.

Aim for:

  • 2 to 3 Australian businesses

  • 2 to 3 global businesses

  • examples across all four key business functions

Choose businesses that can be used in more than one topic.

Step 2: Organise by business function

Set out your notes under the four HSC Business Studies functions:

  • operations

  • marketing

  • finance

  • human resources

This makes it easier to find examples when planning an answer.

Step 3: Link each example to outcomes

For every strategy, ask:

  • What did the business do?

  • Why did it do this?

  • What outcome did it create?

  • How does this link to business performance?

This helps you move beyond description and into analysis.

Step 4: Practise using the same case study in different questions

A good case study can be adapted.

For example, Qantas could be used for:

  • marketing, through loyalty programs and branding

  • operations, through service delivery and scheduling

  • finance, through cost control and revenue management

  • human resources, through training and workplace relations

The key is to select the part of the case study that matches the question.

Worked example

Exam-style question

Explain how a business could use marketing strategies to improve business performance.

Sample answer

Apple uses product differentiation and premium branding to position its products as high-quality and innovative. This allows the business to appeal to customers who value design, technology and brand status. As a result, Apple can build customer loyalty, support repeat purchases and charge premium prices, which may improve profitability and overall business performance.

Why this works

This answer:

  • names a business

  • identifies clear marketing strategies

  • links the strategies to customer behaviour

  • connects the example to business performance

  • avoids vague statements

Common mistakes

  • Memorising business names without knowing useful details.

  • Using examples that do not link to the question.

  • Writing a full history of the business instead of focusing on strategy.

  • Using outdated or inaccurate examples.

  • Describing the strategy but forgetting the outcome.

  • Using the same example in every paragraph without adapting it.

  • Naming a case study but not explaining how it supports the answer.
